New Installation of SAP BW on HANA
If the customer has never used SAP BW, it is worth going for a new installation of SAP BW on HANA system. Here SAP BW server will be installed and connected to SAP HANA database. SAP BW server refers to SAP Netweaver System (ABAP).
There is no preparatory work needed here in contrast to migration as this is a new installation.
Before starting new installation, go through the below documents to familiarize yourself and understand the system requirements-
Information material on new installations
- Master guide – SAP Netweaver 7.5 (http://service.sap.com/InstallNW75)
- End to end Implementation Roadmap SAP Netweaver BW (http://service.sap.com/installNW75)
- Installation guide – SAP Netweaver Application Server ABAP on HANA (http://service.sap.com/installNW75 2-INSTALLATION-SAP NETWEAVER SYSTEMS-INSTALLATION-SYSTEMS BASED ON SAP NETWEAVER 7.1 AND HIGHER-SAP HANA DATABASE)
- SAP Note 789220-Support Package Releases of Netweaver Installations/Upgrades (http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/789220)
You must check your system requirements and also see which softwares you want to install (Enterprise portal, business explorer) along with BW. Also whether you like to run the install as default, distributed or high availability system. These settings are mostly common with the installation of any other SAP systems.
Please note: Dual stack installations (ABAP and Java Stack with common SID) are no longer supported.
SAP HANA appliance
It is assumed that the client has a usable SAP HANA appliance with proper hardware equipment. It is provided and set up by the Hardware partners. Hardware partners are also responsible for the sizing of the SAP HANA system.
If no HANA appliance is available, you can install the SAP HANA database on non certified hardware for test purposes. This will not provide the expected high speeds and the approach is not approved by SAP. (In this case the operating system should be Red hat Linux and there should be at least 32-64 GB of main memory.)
Separate hardware for SAP HANA DB and SAP BW AS ABAP
Till support package 6 of SAP HANA, it was not possible to install SAP BW server directly on SAP HANA appliance. The SAP HANA DB and the SAP BW application server are operated on separate hardware systems. The disadvantage of separate servers is cost or purchasing and maintaining additional server. The advantage is that the HANA database and the BW server don’t compete for the hardware resources.
With the release of support package 7 of SAP HANA platform, it is possible to install and operate the BW ABAP server on the SAP HANA appliance. This approach is referred to as the multi-component deployment strategy (SAP note 1953429).
The advantage of this approach is optimized resources and costs. However, the hardware system should provide adequate main memory and CPU power to HANA appliance. Use ‘SAP QuickSizer‘ to determine the correct sizing requirements for your system. (http://service.sap.com/quicksizer)
SAP BW as JAVA
In earlier versions of SAP HANA, it was not possible to operate JAVA BW server on HANA appliance. JAVA BW server was run on old database. Now things have changed, and you don’t require old database to run SAP Enterprise portal (EP) or BI Java.
Also, both SAP BW Java and SAP BW ABAP server can be installed on the same HANA appliance. This is called as MCOD (Multiple components One Database) installation.
In an MCOD installation, a second schema is created in the HANA database for SAP BW as Java. (SAP note 1661202).

Software Provisioning Manager (SWPM)
SWPM can be used to install the SAP BW on HANA. This tool is also used for migration. SWPM has replaced the earlier SAP Installer (SAPInst) and is part of Software Logistics toolset (SL toolset). SWPM can be downloaded via http://service.sap.com/stoolset – SOFTWARE LOGISTICS TOOLSET 1.0-SYSTEM PROVISIONING-DOWNLOAD TOOL). .SAR fie can be unzipped using the command SAPCAR -xvf <file name>.
Installation using SWPM
Execute sapinst.exe file to start SWPM. Select application to be installed and do a ‘prerequisite check‘. After the check is over, restart SWPM and install the product.
For detailed steps on installation, refer to the SAP installation guide.
Final steps
Install the license and import patches / SAP notes in the BW system if required. Use tcode DBACOCKPIT and program RSDU_TABLE_CONSISTENCY to remove the inconsistencies between DDIC runtime objects and the database tables.
